It is not so simple to have a web site which is
- accessible to members for interchange of comments and files
- searchable
- accessible to the general public, but only partially accessbile because it is
- moderated by a Publications Board
- all at the same time.
While many web site hosting services offer easy to access web sites at a low cost, few offer the features above. If you don't mind letting Google, Yahoo, and everyone else access your initial drafts and postings, then ourgap.org offers no special advantage. On the other hand, if, like our organization as a whole, you would like to limit access to works in progress, and be able to exchange material over the web without immediate fear of copyright issues, then some complexity is inevitable.
Some feel that it is easier to exchange documents by email or flash-card (aka memory stick). That may well be true for a specific committee or a specific project. Not every GAP project needs to be on the web.
