Plone, which is built on Zope, is the software behind this web site. More information is available at plone.org and zope.org. Plone takes it's name from an electric band (more details).
Plone presumes a web site created and maintained by a number of members (users) and groups. Initial drafts can be kept private, just for their authors, but later can be made visible to other members. Final drafts can be submitted for publication. If a designated reviewer agrees, he or she can mark material published at which point it becomes available to the browsing public, not just members of the site.
Plone software is OpenSoftware. It's free for use and modification (not for resale). A variety of sites are based on Plone and modifications of Plone.
